On the morning of February 27, in the hematopoietic stem cell collection room of the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University, after more than five hours of collection, a young man born in the 2000s successfully donated 395 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cell suspension. These “seeds of life,” destined for distant recipients, carry with them profound love and the hope of renewed vitality. This young man from the 2000s is Lü Xiaolong, who works in the warehousing service department of Hebei Guangxiang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., part of Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Group. He is also the second employee from this group to successfully donate hematopoietic stem cells.
Twenty-one-year-old Lü Xiaolong is diligent, down-to-earth, and though he doesn’t talk much in daily life, he has a warm and caring heart. In recent years, Xiao Lü has voluntarily donated blood every year without compensation. During a blood donation in 2019, Xiao Lü first learned about the donation of hematopoietic stem cells and, after providing a sample, joined the Chinese Marrow Donor Program. He said, “I remember that day when I heard the medical staff say that by collecting a bit more blood, we could leave a sample to join the Chinese Marrow Donor Program—and with that, we’d have the chance to save the life of a leukemia patient. I felt this was an incredibly meaningful thing to do, so I took the initiative to give my sample and filled out the application form.” His simple words couldn’t hide the kindness and sincerity deep within his heart.
Although he had initially entered the database out of curiosity, when the real choice—whether to donate or not—finally presented itself, he remained firmly committed to his original intention. Last December, staff from the Red Cross contacted Xiao Lü and informed him that he had been matched with a patient suffering from a blood disease, asking him whether he’d like to donate hematopoietic stem cells. At that moment, he didn’t hesitate at all; instead, he expressed his agreement with both seriousness and determination. “I didn’t think too much about it,” he said. “I just wanted to help others and do something good. The thought that all I had to do was extend my arm to save a life—and that it wouldn’t harm my body in any way—made it absolutely clear to me that I simply had to step up.”
After making the firm decision to donate, Lü Xiaolong began adjusting his diet. “I used to love drinking beverages—almost every meal included one. But for this donation, I’m now drinking more water and cutting back on beverages,” Lü Xiaolong said with a smile. Ever since receiving the call, Xiao Lü has been deliberately adjusting his daily routine: he’s given up beverages, increased his exercise, and is striving to donate hematopoietic stem cells in a healthy and energetic state.
As for this donation, he chose to keep it a secret from his family. “My parents would definitely worry if they found out—so I’m not telling them just yet,” Lü Xiaolong said with a smile. “I’ll explain everything properly when I get home; they’ll surely understand my thoughts and actions.”
The night before the donation, Lü Xiaolong was incredibly excited and woke up just after 3 a.m. “After receiving mobilization agents for four days, I’m finally able to donate hematopoietic stem cells to save someone’s life,” said Lü Xiaolong.
On the day he donated hematopoietic stem cells, Lü Xiaolong received a letter of gratitude from the family of the recipient patient. The letter read: “For our entire family, falling ill was indeed an unfortunate event. Yet, to have met you in this vast sea of people and to have received your loving care is truly a great blessing! Your selflessness and immense compassion have given our family the strength and conviction to keep fighting against the illness!”
After successfully donating his hematopoietic stem cell suspension, Lü Xiaolong said, “I hope the recipient will have a successful surgery and recover their health as soon as possible.”
“Donating hematopoietic stem cells does not harm one’s health. I hope more people will learn about the Chinese Marrow Donor Program and contribute their own bit of kindness.” Recently, Xiao Lü, who has already been discharged from the hospital and returned to work, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the company’s thoughtful care. He added that if similar situations arise in the future, he’ll remain true to his original intention.
