“My mindset when I go out now is completely different from before—I feel like I’m setting out on a mission,” said Jia Li, the driver in the company car pool of Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Normally, he and his colleagues mainly handle vehicle assignments for welcoming and seeing off guests at the company. But recently, they’ve taken on another important responsibility: transporting raw materials urgently needed for production.
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, market demand for the factory’s antibacterial and antiviral pharmaceutical products surged, yet the supply of raw materials often fell woefully short. A few days ago, thanks to the tireless on-site presence and vigilance of our procurement staff, we finally made some progress in securing the raw materials.
Although the issue of raw material supply has been temporarily resolved, getting hundreds of kilometers of raw materials back to the factory in a timely manner and quickly putting them into production remains a real challenge—especially given the current tight availability of logistics vehicles and the high cost of express delivery.
The factory ultimately decided to place this heavy responsibility on the shoulders of the drivers in the small-car fleet.
Jia Li was the first driver to receive orders to set out on a mission. Driving long distances was no big deal for him, who was over fifty years old—having made countless trips, he’d never once been uncertain or hesitant.
At 5 a.m. on February 23, just as the sky was beginning to lighten, he quickly gulped down two bites of breakfast, grabbed his thermos and instant noodles, and hurriedly left the house.
“This is the first long-distance trip since after the Spring Festival, and we’re not even sure what the situation is like on the highway. As we drove along, we spotted only a few big trucks here and there, and almost all the service areas were closed—there wasn’t even a place to get hot water. We had to make do with just some instant noodles for lunch. But hey, we’ve both been in the military; none of this really counts as a big deal,” Master Jia said with a smile.
What should you do when you’re tired? “If you feel exhausted, just pull over at a service area and take a few minutes to rest and recharge.” What about drowsiness? “I’ve got a ‘secret trick’—drink some strong coffee; it really helps you stay alert.”
“The epidemic is an order, and time is life. Every extra minute spent on the road means one more minute delay in receiving the goods—and one more minute delay in producing life-saving medicines. Lives are at stake, so we simply can’t afford to mess up!” Master Jia understands this principle all too well. From the moment he steps out of his home in the morning, he doesn’t dare to waste a single moment, speeding along the entire way.
Around noon, he finally arrived at his destination. Without taking a break, he and the manufacturer’s staff quickly loaded the truck and immediately turned around to head back. “Actually, the one or two hundred kilograms of raw materials we were hauling weren’t heavy at all—but in my heart, they felt incredibly heavy.”
After a day of round-trip travel covering over a thousand kilometers, by the time I returned to the factory, disinfected the vehicles, and completed the material-handover procedures, it was already past 11 p.m.
The next day, when his colleagues saw him, they all said in unison, “Master Jia, you’re incredibly fast!”
Faced with his colleagues’ praise, Jia Li said that, aside from being an ordinary driver, he was also a guardian and a “reverse traveler” on the lifeline—just like the workshop employees.
