Zhai Yafeng, a post-90s individual, was originally a security guard in the property management department of Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his colleagues have taken on the daily task of disinfecting over 10,000 square meters of space in the administrative office area and employee dormitories.

Protective suits, white gloves, masks, and sprayers—these are the full “gear” he uses for his work. For more than twenty days now, Zhai Yafeng’s busy figure has never slowed down; he’s been going back and forth between two points—the workplace and his living quarters—and apart from eating and sleeping, all he does is stand guard and spray disinfectant.

“My current responsibility is to ensure the safety and health of our employees,” said Zhai Yafeng. Starting from January 24—the 30th day of the 12th lunar month—he and his colleagues have been carrying out repeated daily disinfection efforts. The factory’s office areas and employee dormitories are disinfected twice a day, with each disinfection taking at least three hours.

Zhai Yafeng said that disinfecting with sprays is no easy task—after a full day, he can’t put down the spray tank weighing over 20 jin, and he has to make multiple round trips to refill it.

Spending long hours working alongside disinfectant solutions, even through a mask, he found it hard to resist the penetration of the vaporized disinfectant. The smell often left his mouth and nose feeling dry and irritated. After just one such shift, he lost all appetite—even for meals.

Every time he took off his protective suit, his hair had already been glued together by sweat, and a damp, warm vapor rose from the top of his head.

His colleagues have noticed and remembered this—he’s someone who strives for excellence and is determined to see any task through to the very end.

During the Spring Festival, he and his colleagues gave up their rest and took turns on duty to carry out disinfection. “Right now is the most critical period for epidemic prevention and control. We must ensure everyone goes to work in good health—so we absolutely can’t afford to delay disinfection,” he said.

Right now, we’re in a critical phase of epidemic prevention and control. Every day, Zhai Yafeng and his colleagues, clad in protective suits and wearing masks, carry sprayers on their backs as they walk repeatedly through the factory’s office areas and employee dormitories, spraying disinfectant everywhere...
