“Since the outbreak began, we have successively received requests from clinical medical institutions in Hubei, Jiangxi, Beijing, and other regions for additional supplies of abidol hydrochloride capsules,” said Han Shuqin, Deputy General Manager in charge of production at Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., on February 5. “Right now, the abidol capsule production line in our oral dosage form workshop is operating around the clock—two shifts a day—with all employees working without taking any vacations, fully dedicating themselves to meeting the demand for medications on the front lines of epidemic prevention and control.”

In recent days, the oral dosage form workshop of Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has been bustling with activity on its abidol hydrochloride capsule production line. Currently, daily production of abidol hydrochloride capsules has reached 900,000 units, nearly doubling the usual output. As the supply of abidol—the key raw material—gradually recovers, the production capacity of abidol capsules is expected to be further expanded, thereby easing the tight market supply situation.
Sun Lijie, director of the Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical Research Institute, introduced that Arbidol is primarily used to treat upper respiratory tract infections caused by influenza viruses of types A and B. It works by inhibiting the fusion of the virus and host cell membranes, thereby blocking the first step of viral infection. In 2019, it was first included in the National Medical Insurance Catalog and was subsequently re-included in the list of antiviral drugs recommended for clinical use, as published by the National Health Commission.
The Hebei Provincial Drug Administration has learned that, in response to the needs of epidemic prevention and control, and given the production constraints faced by Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. due to insufficient supply of the active pharmaceutical ingredient for abidol hydrochloride capsules, the Administration has organized a special meeting attended by drug regulators, drug registration personnel, technical review experts, and drug testing specialists. The meeting was aimed at helping the company develop and implement a solution. A dedicated member of the emergency approval team has been assigned to liaise closely with the company, while the Chemical Drug Regulatory Division has conducted on-site, one-on-one technical assistance and provided guidance on relevant policies and regulations. On the afternoon of January 28, after receiving the test report from the Hebei Provincial Institute for Drug Control, the Provincial Drug Administration promptly approved Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.’s supplementary application to add an additional supplier of the active pharmaceutical ingredient. Following this approval, the daily production capacity of abidol hydrochloride capsules at Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. will reach 1 million capsules, effectively ensuring the supply of antiviral medications for clinical use.
