On the first day of the Lunar New Year this year, Zhang Yongqin, who had returned to his hometown for the holidays, suddenly received an urgent request from Li Ligong, the manager of the Storage and Transportation Department at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., asking him to immediately dispatch a vehicle.
“There’s a truck heading to Enshi, Hubei today, and we need to load it up right away. The hospital is urgently waiting for the supplies. Could Master Zhang take this trip immediately? We’ll discuss the specifics once we’re there,” Li Ligong said anxiously. After pondering for a while, Zhang Yongqin finally agreed to Xiao Li’s request. “I’m well aware that the epidemic situation in Wuhan is severe, but this really is an urgent matter—otherwise, I wouldn’t be asked to make this trip during the Spring Festival.”
Right after leaving his home on the first day of the Lunar New Year, Zhang Yongqin has been tirelessly working along the transportation route to deliver emergency medicines for epidemic prevention and control.
On February 3, truck driver Zhang Yongqin was busily loading his vehicle. He was about to deliver another batch of medicines from Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical to support Wuhan.
Li Ligong, manager of the Storage and Transportation Department at Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical, double-checked the protective equipment provided to Zhang Yongqin and once again emphasized: “You must pay close attention to safety!”
Nine days ago, he persuaded Zhang Yongqin, his longtime partner, to make a trip to Enshi on the first day of the Lunar New Year to deliver the first batch of medicines supporting Hubei.
“The front lines are urgently in need of medicine, and the rear is working overtime to ramp up production. It’s these brothers who are delivering these life-saving supplies to the front lines,” said Li Ligong. “I think that just like the medical workers who volunteered to go to the front lines, these truck drivers—who travel thousands of miles and risk their safety to deliver supplies—are also the most admirable ‘reverse commuters.’”
On January 25—the first day of the Chinese New Year—medical institutions and pharmaceutical companies in Hubei Province requested urgent support from Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. for emergency medications such as moxifloxacin hydrochloride sodium injection. All staff members at Sihua Pharmaceutical worked closely together to ensure the smooth dispatch of the urgently needed drugs.
At first, Li Ligong approached several logistics companies for cooperation. As soon as the drivers heard about this particular assignment, they all backed out. “One driver had just agreed to take on the job when his wife immediately called him—‘We’ve got elderly parents at home and little kids to look after. Could you please find someone else to go instead?’”
Old partner Zhang Yongqin stepped forward. Zhang Yongqin, who’s in his 50s and has been driving a 9.6-meter truck for many years, said, “Even my kids don’t want me to go. My two older brothers, on the other hand, keep telling me not to rush into trouble—how can we possibly manage this pneumonia? My wife understands the bigger picture and doesn’t say a word; she just keeps packing me up with baked flatbreads, vegetables, and instant noodles. My thinking is simple: I’ll do my absolute best to get these life-saving supplies to the front lines and ensure that the epidemic-stricken areas have what they need.”
Zhang Yongqin’s vehicle is delivering medicine to Enshi, Hubei Province. The one-way trip from Shijiazhuang is nearly 1,500 kilometers long. Because the driver was extremely anxious and couldn’t bear the pressure of having no co-driver, each vehicle carried only one person, with rest stops every four hours. As a result, Zhang Yongqin drove continuously for an entire day and night.
Also departing at the same time as Zhang Yongqin was Yang Weibo, age 43. However, his truck of medicine was headed directly to Wuhan. The two—Zhang Yongqin and Yang Weibo—had traveled together at the start but parted ways in Henan, each heading for their own destination.
Before they set off, Li Ligong gave them comprehensive protective measures and kept reminding them: “Once you arrive at your destination, don’t get out of the car—just stay put and remain in the vehicle.”
Yet as Zhang Yongqin drove on, watching the highway heading toward Hubei gradually emptying out before his eyes, he couldn't shake a growing sense of unease. When they passed through a service area, the staff, upon learning that the truck was delivering medicine to Hubei, thanked him profusely. By the time they reached their destination, the staff and volunteers receiving the medicine eagerly jumped in to unload the cargo—how could he possibly stay seated any longer?
Although his physical examination showed no abnormalities, Zhang Yongqin still voluntarily went into self-isolation upon returning home. With the first reverse-trip experience under his belt, the drivers around him have now gained the courage to do the same. A batch of pharmaceutical products from Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical, destined for Hubei and other regions across the country, has begun shipping out one after another.
On February 3, Zhang Yongqin set off again. Destination: Wuhan.
