At the start of the new year, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical has been receiving one good news after another in R&D and innovation. Following the issuance on January 6 of the first generic drug registration certificate for Fluconazole Sodium Injection by the National Medical Products Administration, on January 11, the company’s newly developed Moxyfloxacin Hydrochloride Tablets also received the national production registration approval.
According to the introduction, fluconazole and moxifloxacin—both broad-spectrum antifungal drugs and next-generation antibiotics with an expanded antibacterial spectrum—have extremely wide clinical applications and a vast market potential. “In particular, moxifloxacin tablets represent a new dosage form developed on the basis of moxifloxacin hydrochloride sodium injection, which played a positive role in epidemic prevention and control in 2020. This new formulation is easier to use in clinical settings. The successful launch of moxifloxacin tablets has strongly facilitated the gradual development of a complete moxifloxacin product line, adding another key ‘piece’ to the company’s market strategy in the antibacterial and antiviral fields.” Sun Lijie, CEO of Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical and General Manager of its R&D Center, said excitedly. “This year, we expect to see more than 40 new products approved, several of which will be the first of their kind nationwide.”
In recent years, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical has anchored itself in the new stage of development, focusing on industry frontiers and market demands, and has stepped up its forward-looking and pioneering R&D efforts. By extending, supplementing, and strengthening industrial chains, the company has established a new development model featuring a well-integrated industrial ecosystem encompassing specialty APIs, generic drugs, innovative drugs, and pharmaceutical packaging materials.
Sun Lijie said, “Since last year, both the provincial and municipal governments have introduced relevant policies to encourage and support the high-quality development of the biopharmaceutical industry. At Sihua Pharmaceutical, we adhere to the R&D philosophy of ‘products first,’ benchmarking against industry leaders and focusing on strategy, talent, and efficiency. We closely align with market demands and, through the integration of industry, academia, research, and application, we’ve stepped up our efforts to tackle key core technologies that have long been bottlenecks. As a result, we’ve made significant progress in developing pioneering new products, accelerating the shift from quantity-based to quality-based R&D, and from homogeneous to specialized approaches in generic drugs, innovative drugs, and active pharmaceutical ingredients. This has not only promoted product diversification, series development, and specialization but also enabled us to firmly take the initiative in innovation and development into our own hands.” In 2021, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical obtained approval for 32 new products, four of which won bids in the national centralized drug procurement, securing a foothold in the nationwide market. Just these four new products alone generated over 800 million yuan in additional revenue, and the contribution rate of new products continues to rise.
Breaking new ground and sustaining momentum in pharmaceutical R&D hinges on talent as its core. Sun Lijie explained that, through exploration and practice, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical has established a relatively comprehensive talent development and service support system. The company adheres to the principle of “innovation knows no background,” implements mechanisms such as “listing challenges and appointing leaders” and “horse-racing competitions,” and actively attracts external talent while nurturing internal talent, thereby stimulating the enterprise’s intrinsic growth drive. By assigning talented individuals to lead key projects, the company has significantly boosted the efficiency of new product development, approval processes, and technology transfer. As a result, its innovation capabilities are accelerating their transformation—from being a “follower” to a “parallel player” and eventually a “leader.”
In the new year, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical has outlined a new blueprint for R&D and innovation. Throughout the year, the company plans to submit 102 applications for new products and aims to secure approvals for over 40 of them, allowing its innovative achievements to steadily accumulate and eventually shine brightly.
“R&D yields results, and enterprises have hope—let’s ensure that R&D personnel, as the ones who’ve made significant contributions, reap both honor and material rewards.” On January 14, at the policy-target release and advanced-employee recognition ceremony held at the Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical R&D Center, Qu Jiguang, Chairman of the Group’s Board of Directors, presented certificates of honor to 10 outstanding scientific and technological workers and also handed over mobility vehicles provided by the company to the 25 project leaders in the second batch of research projects.
“These doctoral, master’s, and expert-level talents are truly ‘highly sought after’ at Siyao,” Qu Jiguang said proudly. “Innovation-driven development is, in essence, talent-driven. What our company is doing is precisely aimed at fostering a favorable ecosystem for talent and innovation—gathering talented individuals from all over the world and putting their skills to good use. We’re providing greater space and a broader stage for all kinds of innovative talents to fully showcase their abilities, enabling them to focus wholeheartedly on scientific research and innovation. In this way, we can make significant contributions to promoting high-quality development of both our company and the city’s biopharmaceutical industry.”
“The company has not only provided us with a first-class research environment and a beautiful, humanistic office setting—offering salaries that rank among the highest in the pharmaceutical industry—but has now also built ‘talent apartments’ and equipped us with transportation tools, effectively alleviating our worries about daily life. As R&D scientists and technologists, in the new year, we’ll remain fully committed, forge ahead with determination, and keep striving tirelessly to develop more and better products, thereby repaying the company and serving society,” said an excited R&D employee who had received an award.
