In recent days, the outbreak of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus in Wuhan has deeply concerned the employees of Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical. “We are closely monitoring the evolving situation and doing everything possible to overcome challenges such as shortages of manpower and transportation capacity before the holiday,” said Su Xuejun, Chairman of the company. “All workshops and departments are going all out to prioritize the production, inspection, allocation, and shipment of antiviral drugs like Abidor capsules and disinfectants, ensuring that clinical medication needs in key regions are met and striving to contribute our part to winning this war fought without smoke.”
Early on January 22, the cold wind was biting. As we stepped into Workshop 102, located in Shijiazhuang High-tech Zone, we found that despite the approaching Spring Festival, the production line for Abidor capsules—anti-influenza virus medication—was bustling with activity. “We’ve urgently reassigned staff and can’t afford to slack off for a moment. All production lines are operating at full capacity, running three shifts a day, to ensure a steady supply of Abidor capsules to the market,” said Han Shuqin, the company’s deputy general manager. “Currently, our daily output of Abidor capsules has reached 900,000 tablets.”
“General Secretary Xi Jinping has issued important instructions on doing a good job in epidemic prevention and control, providing us with clear guidance for our work,” said Su Xuejun. “We will closely align our thinking and actions with General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions as well as the deployment requirements of the Party Central Committee and the State Council. We will put the safety and health of the people first and spare no effort to ensure smooth drug production, thereby providing solid support for epidemic prevention and control.”
The company’s R&D technical staff and production & operations departments attach great importance to the evolving situation of the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, promptly monitor clinical and market demands, and actively coordinate to meet clinical medication needs.
“Abidol capsules are an antiviral drug that our company developed relatively early in China,” explained Dr. Sun Lijie, Director of the company’s Institute of Pharmaceutical Research. Abidol was originally developed in Russia, and research has shown that, in addition to being effective against influenza viruses, it also demonstrates clinical efficacy against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus. In November 2019, it was once again included by the National Health Commission in the “Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Influenza (2019 Edition)” as a clinically recommended antiviral drug for influenza. Following the outbreak of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus infection in Wuhan, fever clinics at relevant hospitals in Wuhan have already listed Abidol as one of the medications currently recommended for treatment.”
The changing epidemic situation has not only led to a rapid increase in demand for antiviral drugs but has also significantly boosted the supply and demand for disinfectant products. At the disinfectant production workshop, employees are stepping up efforts to formulate a new-generation hand sanitizer to meet market needs. Han Shuqin explained, “In recent days, our disinfectant products have almost sold out online on Tmall and JD.com. Offline, sales since the New Year have exceeded 20,000 barrels. Now, the workshop has had to mobilize additional manpower to ramp up production and replenish stock before the holidays.”
In front of the towering, three-dimensional logistics warehouse, freight vehicles urgently dispatched are fully loaded and ready to depart. “Right now, customers in Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Liaoning, and other regions are urgently awaiting deliveries. It’s indeed quite challenging to organize sufficient transport capacity before the holiday—both transportation and labor costs are extremely high. But no matter what, meeting the public’s health needs must come first,” said Manager Li Ligong, who is in charge of warehouse management. He added that since January of this year, the volume of Abidol capsules shipped out has already increased by 513% year-on-year compared to the previous month.
Faced with the sudden surge in market demand, Chairman Su Xuejun stated, “Especially at critical moments, pharmaceutical companies must not only ensure product quality but also uphold social responsibility and accountability—they mustn’t seek profits by compromising their conscience.”
