Since the onset of winter, influenza activity has been rising rapidly. To ensure that national influenza medical services proceed smoothly and in an orderly manner and to effectively protect the health of the public, on November 13, the National Health Commission released the “Influenza Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines (2019 Edition),” providing authoritative recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of influenza this winter and next spring. Influenza, or the flu, is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by influenza viruses, and the entire population is generally susceptible. Due to the ease with which influenza viruses mutate and their rapid transmission, the disease can cause seasonal epidemics every year. Currently, there are three classes of antiviral drugs approved for use in China: neuraminidase inhibitors, hemagglutinin inhibitors, and M2 ion channel blockers. Abidor, recently included in the updated influenza diagnosis and treatment guidelines, is one of the hemagglutinin inhibitors. It can effectively block the fusion of the virus with host cells and also induces the body to produce endogenous interferon, thereby inhibiting viral replication, enhancing the body's immune response, boosting the phagocytic function of macrophages, and promoting the activation of natural killer cells. Abidor exhibits antiviral activity against all types of influenza viruses (A, B, and C), with particularly strong efficacy against influenza A viruses (H1N1, H2N2, and H3N3). It has a high safety profile, with mild adverse reactions, and to date, no drug-resistant strains have been identified. After years of clinical verification, Abidor has now become an essential medication for influenza prevention and control in Russia and is also included in the strategic reserve stock for military use.
Abidol has gained widespread recognition in the medical community. Even before being included in the new edition of the influenza diagnosis and treatment guidelines, Abidol had already been featured in the “Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Influenza A (H1N1) (2010)” issued by the former Ministry of Health. Moreover, both the Respiratory Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, in their jointly published “Chinese Expert Consensus on Antiviral Drug Therapy and Prevention for Influenza (2016),” as well as the Respiratory Physicians Branch of the Chinese Physicians Association in its 2016 “Expert Consensus on the Rational Use of Antiviral Drugs for Influenza,” have also recommended Abidol as a commonly used antiviral drug for influenza.
Meanwhile, Abidor has also been recommended in the “Interpretation of Clinical Pathways (2018 Edition)—Respiratory Diseases Volume: Interpretation of the Clinical Pathway for Community-Acquired Pneumonia.” In addition, it has been included in the “Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (2019 Edition).” This August, Abidor was added to the 2019 National Medical Insurance Catalog as a Class B drug, authorized for antiviral treatment of influenza specifically in high-risk groups with severe influenza and in patients with severe illness.
