Peritoneal dialysis uses the peritoneum as a dialysis membrane. Dialysate is infused into the abdominal cavity, allowing for the exchange of substances between the blood in the peritoneal capillaries and the dialysate. Metabolic waste products and excess fluid retained in the body are removed from the body along with the spent dialysate, while the dialysate replenishes essential substances. By repeatedly infusing fresh dialysate into the abdominal cavity, it is possible to achieve therapeutic goals such as toxin removal, dehydration, correction of acidosis, and normalization of electrolyte imbalances.
Today, peritoneal dialysis has evolved into an important component of renal replacement therapy, alongside hemodialysis and kidney transplantation, owing to its simple and convenient operation and proven efficacy. Compared with developed countries, however, the utilization rate of peritoneal dialysis in China remains relatively low, leaving considerable room for market growth.
