The new era is forged through hard work and struggle. To celebrate the International Labor Day on May 1, Xinhuanet’s Hebei Channel, in collaboration with the Hebei Provincial Federation of Trade Unions, has launched a series of interviews titled “Songs of Workers,” inviting frontline worker representatives to share their inspiring stories of upholding the spirit of craftsmanship and writing brilliant chapters in their ordinary posts. This episode features Xia Guolong, recipient of the Hebei Province May Day Labor Medal and Deputy Director of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
Xinhua Net: The development of pharmaceuticals embodies the precious spirit of craftsmanship. Compared with the development of other industrial products, what are the key differences in pharmaceutical R&D?
Xia Guolong: We need even more of a scientific spirit characterized by perseverance, meticulous focus, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
Medicines are directly related to people’s lives and safety. As pharmaceutical researchers, we bear an even greater sense of responsibility. To ensure the safety of medicines, every step—from laboratory pharmacological studies and animal pharmacological safety assessments to clinical trials in humans—must be carried out with absolute precision and without the slightest margin for error. To make good medicines less bitter, researchers personally taste them during flavor evaluation studies, enabling them to fine-tune formulations more effectively. Behind every single medicine lies the silent, dedicated, and painstaking efforts of countless researchers who are deeply committed to excellence, meticulous in their work, and tirelessly devoted to learning, thinking, and acting. It is a true embodiment of the “pioneering ox” spirit—characterized by innovative development, relentless problem-solving, and overcoming formidable challenges.
Xinhua Net: Drug safety is directly related to the health and lives of the people. What kind of protection have the drugs developed by you and your team brought to everyone?
Xia Guolong: Meeting the demand for high-quality medicines and alleviating the financial burden of medication on the people.
In recent years, we have actively undertaken the work of evaluating the quality and therapeutic equivalence of generic drugs in China. Through re-studies of these drugs and enhancements to their quality standards, many generic drugs have now reached quality levels comparable to those of their imported originator counterparts. To date, we have 22 drug varieties comprising 30 specifications that have successfully passed the equivalence evaluation. Among them, four specifications—including Ciprofloxacin Lactate Sodium Injection—were among the first in the industry to obtain such approval. Thanks to this “pass” provided by the equivalence evaluation, we have actively participated in the government’s centralized drug procurement program, offering affordable alternatives to costly foreign medications. This not only meets the public’s demand for high-quality medicines but also genuinely alleviates the financial burden of medication on ordinary people.
Xinhua Net: You’ve led your young team to achieve remarkable results. What insights and experiences can you share on helping young people feel confident and at ease in their research?
Xia Guolong: Providing a stage for young people to showcase their talents and inspiring them to bravely take on heavy responsibilities.
I believe that, first and foremost, we need to create a favorable ecosystem for talent and innovation tailored specifically for young R&D personnel, providing them with a platform to fully showcase their talents. For example, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical has successively established high-end R&D and innovation platforms such as the National Enterprise Technology Center and the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory. Additionally, we’ve set up research and innovation centers in collaboration with universities like China Pharmaceutical University. These initiatives not only boost the company’s R&D and innovation efforts but also offer young R&D professionals a robust platform for their personal growth and development.
Second, we should inspire and motivate them through career development. By establishing a comprehensive talent incentive system, we can foster in young R&D personnel a strong sense of responsibility and willingness to take on challenging tasks. By setting examples of those who are “willing to dedicate themselves and overcome all difficulties,” we can encourage them to face hardships without fear, live up to the mission of our times, and make the most of their youthful years.
Finally, we will provide young talents with favorable work and living conditions—including an excellent research environment, high-quality office facilities, and attractive salary and benefits—so that they can devote themselves wholeheartedly to scientific research and innovation without any distractions.
