On October 11, the 2019 China International Digital Economy Expo (hereinafter referred to as the Zhengding Digital Expo), themed “Digital Economy Leads High-Quality Development,” opened at the Shijiazhuang (Zhengding) International Convention and Exhibition Center. The Zhengding Digital Expo is the only national-level expo in China that bears the name “digital economy.” At the Zhengding Digital Expo, Shijiazhuang Siyao showcased the application of smart workshops in enterprises through VR technology.
In front of the VR display screen at Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical’s smart factory, many curious visitors put on VR goggles and found themselves immersed in an experience of the country’s most advanced intelligent intravenous solution production line. “All it takes is one command—just a single click of a button—and the entire powder-conveying system comes to life. The system then automatically handles everything else! Smart technology has truly revolutionized our production methods,” praised Xiao Ren, a resident of Shijiazhuang who graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering equipment. “The powder-conveying system is the ‘heart’ of the workshop. It precisely measures and mixes ingredients for different types and formulations of pharmaceutical solutions—all with just a single ‘one-click’ operation. Once you give the system the required instruction, it takes care of the rest automatically,” explained a staff member from Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical. The weighing and batching processes in the three storage warehouses of the Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical workshop are all controlled by Italy’s DEC system, ensuring they’re fully enclosed and automated. Operators simply need to follow the pre-designed formulas and click the mouse. Previously, this process relied entirely on manual weighing, dispensing, and mixing, which was not only labor-intensive but also prone to contaminating the pharmaceutical products.
“I saw boxes of medicine being automatically transported along conveyor belts inside the huge warehouse—automatically scanned, stacked, and then moved to the automated racking system by driverless railcars. The intelligence of Siyao has completely reshaped my perception of warehouses!” said a citizen.
In the pharmaceutical industry, with the widespread adoption of highly automated and intelligent equipment, it has become evident that the advantages of such technology extend beyond mere cost reduction—they also play a significant role in optimizing manufacturing processes, minimizing quality risks in pharmaceutical products, and enhancing drug safety. Recognizing this trend, Shiyao Group has successively invested 3 billion yuan in implementing eight major technological upgrade projects. Benchmarking against world-class standards, the company has introduced a host of cutting-edge global equipment, including fully automatic powder conveying systems, thermal-pressure distillation units, one-step bottle-making machines, and automated light inspection machines, further elevating the automation and intelligence levels of its production workshops.
In the past, the light inspection station in the Shi Si Pharmaceutical workshop was the position with the highest demand for manual labor—every single product had to be visually inspected by human eyes to determine whether it was good or bad. Today, however, manual inspection has been replaced by automated light inspection machines, significantly boosting production line capacity while drastically reducing the need for human labor. Under the control of the automatic light inspection machine, each bottle of product automatically generates 150 images during the process. These images are then analyzed by a sophisticated software program that automatically identifies defects and directs defective products onto the appropriate sorting conveyor belt. Since adopting this light inspection machine, the qualified rate of related products has reached as high as 99.99%.
“The most distinctive feature of Siyao is its integration of intelligent technologies into every stage of the production process. By seamlessly combining robots, production lines, automated warehouses, and information systems, we’ve achieved automation, intelligence, and integration across the entire lifecycle of pharmaceutical products—from manufacturing and storage to distribution—minimizing human intervention to the greatest extent possible. This has significantly reduced the rate of drug contamination, lowered operational intensity, ensured drug quality, and boosted both production efficiency and accuracy,” said Han Shuqin, Deputy General Manager of Shi Si Yao.
It is reported that Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical was the first to adopt a fully automated logistics center, which is integrated with the production lines, enabling fully automated inbound and outbound operations and making tasks such as inventory checks, report generation, and data queries simple and efficient.
At this exhibition, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical, as the world’s largest single-site automated intravenous solution manufacturer, showcased the application of intelligent technologies in its operations to audiences across the country, drawing numerous enthusiasts who came to observe and exchange ideas. As a leading enterprise in China’s large-volume parenteral solutions industry, Shijia No.4 Pharmaceutical has maintained annual growth rates exceeding 10% for many consecutive years. Behind this remarkable achievement, Shijia No.4 Pharmaceutical has leveraged technological innovation, transforming and upgrading its production processes from large-scale, automated operations toward intelligent and digital manufacturing. By harnessing big data and advanced intelligent technologies, the company is driving factory renovations, technological upgrades, and product optimizations, thereby accelerating its full transition into a new era of smart manufacturing.
